Senior Director Data Scientist

📍 Grand Rapids, MI

Position Summary:
The Principal Data Scientist is responsible for leading data strategy and cultivating a culture of data-driven decision-making throughout the organization. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather, analyze, and interpret complex data sets into clear, actionable insights, helping to shape crucial business initiatives and propelling the organization towards its strategic objectives.

Essential Functions:
  1. Spearhead the development and implementation of data strategy to unlock the full potential of data-driven decision-making across the organization.
  2. Lead the design, development, and deployment of advanced analytical models and algorithms to solve complex business problems.
  3. Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to identify business objectives, define data requirements, and formulate effective data-driven solutions.
  4. Gather, analyze, and interpret complex and diverse datasets from various sources, employing SQL, Snowflake, Alteryx, and Five Tran to ensure data integrity and accuracy.
  5. Build and oversee ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes and data migration projects, including designing, developing, testing, and deploying robust data pipelines and workflows to ensure accurate and efficient migration of data across multiple systems.
  6. Leverage the power of Tableau and other innovative visualization tools to create insightful, interactive dashboards and reports that facilitate data-driven insights and decision-making.
  7. Apply machine learning techniques to build predictive models, classification algorithms, and recommend optimal business strategies.
  8. Conduct thorough exploratory data analysis to discover meaningful patterns, trends, and anomalies, shedding light on critical business insights and opportunities.
  9. Communicate findings and insights effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders through presentations and reports.
  10. Collaborate closely with data engineers to ensure the availability, accuracy, and security of data infrastructure and storage solutions, including Blob Storage and cloud-based platforms.
  11. Stay up to date with the latest industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in data science, data architecture, and analytics, applying them to enhance our data strategy and methodologies.
  12. Mentor and guide junior data scientists in their professional growth and development.
  13. Establish and implement policies for effective data management, ensuring privacy, security, and adherence to relevant ethical standards and regulations.
  14. Advocate for a data-driven culture within the organization, driving the understanding, integration, and application of data science methodologies across different business units.
  15. Engage with senior leadership and stakeholders to align data science initiatives with organizational goals and objectives, ensuring transparency and mutual understanding.
  16. Develop and track Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure effectiveness of projects and strategy.
  17. Regularly review and maintain data systems and models to ensure their continued accuracy, efficiency, and relevancy.
  18. Foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement within the data science team, regularly organizing team training and knowledge sharing sessions.
  19. Ensure the robustness and reliability of data science code and systems through comprehensive testing strategies, including unit tests, regression tests, and validation against known benchmarks.
 
Study or Knowledge or Experience:
  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience in Data Science, Computer Science, and Statistics.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in data science, data architecture, and analytics.
  • Proficiency in SQL and hands-on experience working with databases and data warehousing systems, with expertise in Snowflake.
  • Strong expertise in data manipulation, transformation, and integration using tools such as Alteryx and FiveTran.
  • Advanced proficiency in Tableau or similar visualization tools, enabling the creation of insightful and visually appealing dashboards and reports.
  • Extensive experience working with Salesforce and extracting meaningful insights from its data.
  • Familiarity with Blob Storage and cloud-based data storage solutions.
  • Solid understanding and practical application of machine learning techniques, including regression, clustering, classification, and recommendation systems.
  • Proficiency in Python or R for developing and deploying machine learning models.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills, with a strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively convey complex concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to lead and mentor a team of data scientists, fostering their growth and development.
  • Demonstrated experience in data strategy development and driving data-driven decision-making within an organization.
  • Knowledge of Agile methodologies and project management practices.
  • Strive to live a life consistent with Biblical principles, engaged with the Bible on a consistent basis and demonstrate continued growth and spiritual development. 
 
Internal Work Environment:
Develops, maintains, and improves communication channels among various teams and departments to ensure effective flow of information throughout the organization. Facilitates cross-functional collaboration and teamwork. Handles sensitive situations or controversial issues with tact, discretion, and sensitivity. Exhibits excellent judgment regarding the appropriate content and timing of communications. Creates and delivers major presentations for company-wide meetings, board meetings, and other high-level gatherings.

External Communication:
Establishes and maintains communication with vendors, partners, and other external stakeholders. Understands their needs, expectations, and requirements to foster positive and productive relationships and model Biblical principles.

Leadership Responsibility:
Provides technical and thought leadership and expert guidance on appropriate statistical, machine learning, and data mining techniques to solve complex business problems. Shares knowledge and provide mentorship to junior data scientists and other team members, helping to uplift the overall data literacy and capability of the organization.

Stewardship of Resources:
Contribute to the budget planning process for data science initiatives, providing expert input on anticipated resources required for data acquisition, storage, analysis, as well as necessary tools and technologies. Offer insightful feedback to ensure cost-effectiveness and alignment with project goals.
