Data Engineer III or IV

Reports to Senior Director of Technology & Information

The Data Engineer III or IV at Word on Fire is pivotal in designing, constructing, installing, testing, and maintaining highly scalable data management systems. This role ensures that all data pipelines are scalable, repeatable, and secure, and can serve multiple users within the organization. The Data Engineer III or IV will collaborate closely with IT, software developers, and organizational leaders to build tailored data solutions that support the mission of Word on Fire.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain scalable data pipelines and build out new integrations to support continuing increases in data volume and complexity
  • Build processes supporting data transformation, data structures, metadata, dependency, and workload management
  • Implement processes and systems to monitor data quality, ensuring production data is always accurate and available for key business processes that depend on it
  • Design data modeling processes to create algorithms and predictive models; model key ministry relational data to ensure it is structured, sufficiently normalized, and enables performant access
  • Design and construct large relational databases
  • Gather requirements and business processes from multiple sources, including feature requests, and product feedback to prioritize data and information requirements; align data architecture with business requirements
  • Train and mentor members of the organization on data organization, security, access, and reporting
  • Assist ministry data analysts with creating dashboards and reports, ensuring they have access and understanding of the underlying data structures
  • Write and maintain a data dictionary or data documentation to communicate data structure to the rest of the ministry
  • Use Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) tools to combine and organize data from multiple sources
  • Comply with data governance and security requirements
  • Manage assigned projects using project management software, communicating with leadership and other teams on available bandwidth, any blocking items, and completed tasks

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering with 4-6 years of experience as a professional software engineer/developer; or 6-8 years of experience as a professional software engineer/developer
  • Expert knowledge of relational databases such as MySQL or Postgres
  • Strong analytic skills related to working with structured and unstructured datasets
  • Proficiency with data pipeline and workflow management tools
  • Proficiency is using Business Intelligence software
  • Proficiency with object-oriented languages such as Python, PHP, JavaScript, etc.
  • Proficiency of data structures, algorithms, and system design
  • Experience with working with Cloud compute and storage resources
  • Proficiency in basic software project management principles
  • Familiarity in using Git to manage code repositories and how to manage code development with a team
  • Commitment to the mission of Word on Fire

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience building and optimizing ‘big data’ data pipelines, architectures, and data sets
  • Experience with using MySQL to handle millions of rows per table.
  • Experience with a business intelligence tool such as Tableau. 
  • Experience with Google Cloud Platform.
  • Experience performing root cause analysis on internal and external data and processes to answer specific business questions and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills
  • Experience with machine learning and artificial intelligence
  • Experience supporting and working with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment
  • Experience with data governance and privacy laws
  • Experience with PHP and Laravel
  • Familiarity with the work of Bishop Robert Barron and Word on Fire
